The guardswoman is caught and Courtlyn has her killed and her body fed to his three pet panthers. He also holds Halden hostage. Xaden and Violet go to Courtlyn as Duke and Consort and a fight ensues. Finally, Violet forces Courtlyn to let Halden go, to allow them to use Tecarus' estate on Deverelli as a stopping ground as they search the other islands, and do pardon Xaden for killing some of his guards. Dragons
Creature
Dragons are large flying creatures with four legs, two wings, strong jaws with sharp teeth, and the ability to breathe fire, although their size does vary greatly. There are seven distinct breeds of dragon, known by their color: black, blue, green, red, orange, brown, and a seventh, newly re-discovered breed with a iridescent sheen. Dragons have a weapon at their ends of their tails, which develops partly out of need, partly out of choice. The options we are aware of are morningstartail, clubtail, swordtail, daggertail, and scorpiontail. Juvenile dragons are golden in color with what is called a feathertail, meaning there is no weapon at the end of their tail.
Dragons channel magic to their bonded rider that gives their rider a unique ability called a signet. A dragon's bond with their riders are strong, if a dragon dies, so does their rider. However, a dragon may survive their rider dying and can go on to bond again later.
A seventh breed of dragon has recently been re-discovered. The peaceful iridescent or irid dragon, which chooses to retain their feathertails for the duration of their lives.

Faris poisons them by slipping something into their chocolate cake and nearly kills Garrick. However, Violet is able to save him and poisoned also did a little poisoning of her own by slipping poison into the tea. She had already given the antidote to her own party. When a flier dies, so does their gryphon.

Dragons - The only person to ever bond with two dragons:
Tairn (black morningstartail)
Andarna (irridescent scorpiontail)
Signet - lightning wielder
Second Signet - dream walker
Second-year cadet. Wife of Xaden and Duchess of Tyrrendor. Youngest daughter of General Lilith Sorrengail and her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Asher Daxton Sorrengail. Born with a condition causing her joints to subluxate, or partially dislocate, frequently. Originally intended to join the Scribe Quadrant, so is well educated in the languages and history of Navarre. Has brown hair with silver at the ends.
Joined the revolution at Aretia. One of a small team that discovered how to and successfully managed to power a wardstone. Fought at Basgiath and refired the Basgiath wardstone. After the Battle at Basgiath, is sent on a mission to find the irid dragons and establish diplomatic ties, hopefully securing reinforcements in the war with the venin. Fought at Draithus.
Wyvern
Creature
Similar to dragons but larger and with only two legs, where dragons have four. Gray in color with razor-sharp feathers down their neck and tails containing poison barbs. There are three known breeds of wyvern, known for the color of their fire: blue, red, and green.
Wyvern are created and controlled by dark wielders. While it is possible to kill a wyvern on it's own, the most efficient way is to kill the dark wielder that created it. Doing so will kill all of the wyvern created by that dark wielder.
Xaden Riorson

Dragon - Sgaeyl (blue daggertail)
Signet - shadow wielder
Second signet - inntinnsic able to read the intentions of a person.
Xaden has a second signet because Sgaeyl was previously bonded to Xaden's grandfather. Bonding a dragon who was previously bonded to a relation can cause the rider to develop a second signet, or a particularly strong signet, but may instead cause madness in the rider.
Second Lieutenant last stationed at Samara. Duke of Tyrrendor and husband of Violet. A leader of the current revolution. Only child of Fen Riorson, leader of the Tyrrish rebellion who was executed when the rebellion ended and Talia, wife of one of the Hedotis triumvirate. Turned by Berwyn. Led students at Basgiath to Aretia to join the Revolution and exposed Navarre's lies about the venin. Turned venin during the Battle at Basgiath.
Goes on the mission to find the irid dragons and secure reinforcements, finding his mother's whereabouts in the process and discovering he has two half-brothers. Leaves Tyrrendor to Violet when he succumbs to the darkness and channels in a big way, no longer fighting turning venin while fighting at Draithus.
The Barrens
Country
The area of the continent furthest southeast, the Barrens is a desolate, dry, desert area that has been abandoned by any living things.
During the Great War, gryphons, dragons, and humans worked together to defeat the venin army of the Barrens. The venin they fought against did not channel power through a dragon or gryphon, instead pulling it directly from the source, draining any life from the ground they pulled from and leaving the area in the barren state it is named for.
The corrupted humans who turn venin, known as dark wielders, are now believed to come from more places than just the Barrens. The dark wielders are able to create and ride wyvern, which are similar to dragons. Dark wielders can only be killed with special runed daggers, although Violet was able to kill one with her lightning. There are several tiers of power for dark wielders, which are (from weakest to most powerful) initiate, asim, sage, maven.
While Navarre's history acknowledges the Barrens as a place, it has erased any mention of dark wielders and venin in it's literature, including in folklore.
Navarre
Country
The largest country, taking up the western half of the continent. It comprises six different provinces: Luceras, Calldyr, Morraine, Deaconshire, Elsum, and Tyrrendor. Tyrrendor was the last province to swear fealty and attempted to secede in what is now called the Tyrrish Rebellion, which was put down five years before the start of Fourth Wing. Currently ruled by King Tauri.
Recently had a number of military students and riders in the military desert the military after discovering that the leaders of the country had withheld information from the rest of the citizens. Primarily about the existence of venin. They joined the new Revolution in Aretia but fought alongside Navarre in the Battle at Basgiath. After the battle, the forces at Aretia agreed to rejoin Navarre to be behind Navarre's wards.
Navarre contains the Vale, the nesting grounds of dragons. The power of the dragons powers the wards protecting the country. Navarre is also the home to Basgiath War College, which has four different areas of study. 1. Infantry Quadrant: training infantry soldiers that fight on the ground. 2: Scribe Quadrant: training scribes that protect the history of the country. 3. Healer Quadrant: training healers and medics. 4. Rider Quadrant: training dragon riders that bond and fight with their dragon.
Has recently entered into an alliance with Tyrrendor and Poromiel to join together against the venin, and have established diplomatic relations with several of the Southern Isles.

Poromiel
Country
Located to the east of Navarre, Poromiel and Navarre have been at war for four-hundred years. It is made up of three provinces: Krovla, Braevick, and Cygnisen. Currently ruled by King Tecarus.
Poromiel is the home of the gryphons, which are unable to power wards, leaving Poromiel much more vulnerable to attack. Poromiel has its own airborne soldiers who bond with gryphons, called fliers. Fliers are broken up into groups called drifts, similar to how riders are divided into wings.
Cliffsbane Flight Academy, where the fliers were trained, was recently taken over by venin. The academy cadets have been living with Viscount Tecarus in Cordyn until an agreement was made with the Revolution. This agreement requires the Revolution to house and teach the fliers in Aretia, alongside their rider cadets.
Recently entered into an alliance with Navarre to band together to fight the venin, ending a four-hundred year war.
