Annie Bot by Sierra Greer

Annie Bot is Sierra Greer's debut novel and has been receiving a lot of praise. It's one of Amazon's Best Books of the Year So Far for 2024 and was chosen for several Book of the Month book clubs for March 2024. It deals with quite a bit of body shaming and bullying, as well as cancer, slight domestic abuse, fatphobia, and sexual violence.

Annie was built for her owner, Doug. She originally was going to be used for cooking and cleaning but pretty quickly, Doug changed her over to take care of his baser, more carnal, needs. She spends all of her time trying to figure out how to please Doug, how to make his life easier, how to know what he wants before even HE knows what he wants. Whenever she falls short and makes Doug unhappy, she doesn't know what to do with herself. All she can think of is how to fix it and make Doug happy. It's in her programming. Doug says that he likes it when Annie seems more like a person so she does some research, on curiosity, on keeping secrets.

This book was a short read. It was very interesting and really sets humans apart. It's very easy in the book to feel more for Annie than you ever do for Doug, who seems like he would be a crappy person anyway. You cheer for Annie as she starts to test her limits and find her own autonomy, and I can say from experience that you never cheer for Doug, who seems like the kind of guy that tells his girlfriend she's gained a few pounds and then wonders what he did wrong if she gets upset. An interesting concept as AI gets more and more intelligent and starts to take on more of our daily tasks. There were times that I felt like the book moved a bit slow but overall, the writing was good, the pace was decent, Annie was very likeable, and there was nothing over complicated when it came to the technology.

I'm giving Annie Bot by Sierra Greer 3.5 stars out of 5. It wasn't my favorite book so far this year but I thought it was an interesting read, and different from the books that I gravitate toward. I'm interested to see if Sierra Greer has more ideas and what she might come up with in the future.

Pairs well with meatballs and a long call with your best friend, although I wouldn't say no to a robot that cleans my house either.
