Daisy Jones & The Six came out in March of 2019. Since then it has sold over 2 million copies, chosen as best book of the year for 2019 by several sources (NPR, the Washington Post, BookRiot), chosen as the Reese's Book Club pick of March 2019, and made into a limited series by Amazon Prime (it won 2 Emmys). It follows a band on their way to fame so we have quite a bit of drug abuse, as well as addiction, death, alcoholism, infidelity, suicidal thoughts, abandonment, and pregnancy and abortion.
Daisy Jones grew up in Los Angeles, neglected by her famous parents, and had to find her own way in the world. Luckily, she's an incredibly talented singer, but she wants to write her own songs. Enter The Six, with their charismatic front man Billy Dunne. They're just coming off of a record that was well received but their producer thinks they need something new to follow it up, and he knows exactly who that something is. Billy and Daisy do not work together well, but when they do, they manage to come up with magic. The band rockets to worldwide fame, quickly becoming the biggest name in the music industry. Until one day, something happens to break the band apart, or several somethings. No one knows what happened but the band left their concert, hung up their guitars (and drumsticks), and never played together again. They're finally ready to tell everything.
Taylor Jenkins Reid is killing it for me. I loved this! It hasn't unseated The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo as my favorite book by Jenkins Reid, but it was still excellent. It is written as a series of interviews and I chose to listen to the audiobook rather than read the text, and I think that it made my experience even better. Each character is narrated by their own actor and it was like listening to a documentary. The characters were so well written, they felt real. The story of how they rose to fame and fell apart was arresting, I listened to the whole thing in two days. It has all of the bad behavior you expect from a band in their heyday, but being told by the band members once they're older and wiser. Funny, realistic, I loved the whole thing.
I'm giving Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid 4.5 stars out of 5. I can't wait to read her most recent novel, and I'll be keeping my eye on any upcoming projects she's releasing.

Pairs well with burgers and the wisdom that comes with age.
