Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Blue Irises that are starting to wilt
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

This is the first book in Rebecca Ross' Letter's of Enchantment series. This is the only book I've ever read by her, but it certainly won't be the last. I loved this book, from start to finish. Her characters are snarky and relatable, their conversations are engaging, the writing was well done and easy to read, the conversations were realistic. I can't wait to read the sequel. Warning: this has moderate amounts of violence, but nothing particularly gruesome, alcohol abuse, and it discusses the death of a parent and a child.

The story starts with Iris Winnow, who's brother has gone off to war to fight for a newly awakened goddess and is now missing, and who's mother is unable to cope with that. She's an incredible writer and starts working for one of the most popular newspapers in the city, where she meets Roman Kitt, a rich kid who is vying for the same coveted columnist position. Eventually Iris goes to the front lines to work as a war correspondent, and to find her missing brother.

I can't say enough about this book. I started reading it not expecting much, but quickly could not put it down. I love that both main characters are writers and as such, they both express themselves better when writing than speaking face to face, something that I can relate to. The two dimensions of their relationship, written versus face to face, are different in every way, but realistic and I loved following their journey together. I really did not like the ending, but in a good way, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

I'm giving Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross 5 out of 5 stars! Spice level is a nice easy 1 out of 5.

Pairs well with a sunrise run and some warm chicken rice soup.
