First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston

Ashley Elston is an author that has several books under her belt, although this is the first that I've read. It was chosen as Reese's Book Club pick of January 2024. Suspenseful but never scary, this book deals with death, a car accident, fire and fire injury, death of a parent, murder, cancer, chronic illness, and classism.

Evie'e life really seems to be picking up. While working as a bartender at a truck stop, she meets Ryan and they really hit it off. Soon, she's moving into the big, fancy house he inherited from his grandparents and he helps her get a job that is a little...classier. But Evie isn't really Evie. It's the name she was given for this job, to get close to Ryan. And the problem is, she's been put on notice after she botched her last job. Things start to get interesting when Evie meets Lucca Marino, who was sent by Evie's boss.

When I started this book, I thought it was a little bit weird. But a few chapters in, I was intrigued. It has a very cool way of flip flopping between Evie's life now as she tries to win a game against her boss and jobs that Evie did in the past. I really enjoyed how the story opens up in front of you, each job gives you a little more insight into Evie and the challenges that she is up against and I was surprised by the ending, something that does not happen often. And even though they're not quite on the right side of the law, I really liked the main characters.

I'm giving First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston 4.25 stars out of 5. I really enjoyed it, although it took me a few chapters to get hooked.

Pairs well with some sweet potato fries and some light criminal activity.
