What a sequel! Rebecca Yarros' second book in her Empyrean series is just as captivating after the first. This is a review of Iron Flame, if you're looking for a summary of any books in the Empyrean series, please click here. This book deals with violence, torture, war, injury details, abandonment, fire and fire injury (we are dealing with dragons here), xenophobia, and kidnapping.
We continue to follow Violet Sorrengail, now in her second year of training. It should be getting easier now, right? Absolutely not! Violet now must keep herself alive, and she has a whole new set of first-years that will be joining her in Fourth Wing. Many of which will die. Violet is torn between helping them and closing her heart to them altogether, it's particularly difficult when one of the cadets is someone she's known since childhood and another cadet is the younger sister of a good friend. Violet has to deal with all of this, plus a new Vice-Commandant that really seems to have it out for her, when something happens that throws all of her plans for the future right out of the window.
I'm always cautious going into the second book of a series. The first book ropes me in, but then the second book seems slow and does not leave me excited for any future installments. Not the case here, Iron Flame is just as captivating as it's predecessor, Fourth Wing. I can't wait for the third book, I even have a countdown set on my phone. I have completely fallen in love with the characters, which I'm fully aware might not end well for me.
I will say that Iron Flame seems more scattered than Fourth Wing. There is plenty of action and drama to keep you interested, but it seemed like Yarros is trying to set up a lot of plot for the future books. If you liked how chronological Fourth Wing was, be warned, there are so many twists (in a good way)!
The end of this book floored me. No spoilers here, but you need to read it. Just go do it! I'm giving Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros 4 out of 5 stars! Spice level is a 2.5 out of 5.

Pairs well with a gauzy, black number and some chocolate cake.
