Mother-Daughter Murder Night by Nina Simon

Mother-Daughter Murder Night is Nina Simon's debut fiction novel, and she really comes out swinging. This book is a New York Times bestseller and was chosen as the September 2023 pick for Reese's Book Club. As you may have deduced from the title, this book deals with murder, cancer, a fire resulting in injury, death of a parent, and injury detail.

Lana Rubicon is a high-powered real estate mogul, at the head of her own company that she opened after her husband left her and their daughter. She's fought tooth and nail for everything she has, something she is very proud of. Unfortunately, a shock cancer diagnosis leaves her needing the help of her estranged daughter. While staying with her daughter and granddaughter, a man is murdered and his body is found by Lana's granddaughter, Jack. This propels Jack to the top of an unimaginative detective's very short suspect list. Now Lana, her daughter Beth, and Jack must clear Jack's name and find the real murderer.

I really enjoyed this book. First, let me say that Lana is a real role model when it comes to standing up for yourself and fighting for what you want, although she is lacking in some other areas. We get to explore the relationship she has with both Beth and Jack (who calls her grandmother "Prima" as in prima donna), and what led to the rift between Lana and Beth. There is a lot of growth, both within the characters themselves and within their relationships, as they investigate the murder. I found all of the characters to be quirky and charming in their own ways and really enjoyed watching their relationships expand, and I thought that their investigation was well done and laid all the information out for the reader to draw their own conclusions.

I'm giving Mother-Daughter Murder Night by Nina Simon 4.25 stars out of 5. It was an easy read, it moved quickly and all the characters were very likeable. I can't wait to see what else Nina Simon comes up with in the future.
