Do not read this review if you have any intention of reading the series, because although I strive not to spoil a book when it's being reviewed, the mere existence of this book is a spoiler for the preceding books. You've been warned. Continue on. We continue on our journey, no longer following Celaena Sardothien but moving right over to Aelin Galathynius. This is book deals with bullying, child abuse, death and gore, genocide, physical abuse, sexual violence, forced institutionalization, slavery, torture, general violence, blood, vomit, kidnapping, grief, medical trauma, murder, fire, gaslighting, war, injury, and classism. I think that's it.

Aelin arrives back in Rifthold (by herself) and she has a couple items on her agenda. First thing, check on Chaol and Dorian and make sure that they're okay (they are not). Second thing, start to rebuild her court from the ground up (easy peasy, she already has one member). Third thing, make her enemies pay (namely Arobynn and the King of Adarlan). Not necessarily in that order. Problem is, when she arrives in Rifthold, she realizes that things are worse than she had feared. But she finds allies in old friends, allies in new friends, and allies in old enemies. The one good thing is that when your enemy is universally hated, allies are easy to come by. But can they be trusted?

Here we go! I really liked this book. There were twists, there were turns. We were outsmarting everybody. Aelin has become a much less annoying character overall (I thank Rowan for this improvement), although Chaol has become a much more annoying character overall. I still have hope for him though, I have faith he will do better in the next chapter. We get new characters that I love, we get old characters that we haven't seen in a while that I love, we get all of our old friends that I love, we get to wreak vengeance left, right, and center... I love that too! It's hard for me to wreak vengeance in my personal life, so personally I really like living through Aelin's. I'm excited for the next installment, which I can only imagine is going to get even better. I can't wait.

I'm giving Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas 4.5 stars out of 5. The best of the series so far, I can't wait to see what's coming. If you want a refresh on the series, take a look at our series summary page, complete with spoiler free study guides.

Pairs well with pear tarts and finally breaking glass houses (or other glass habitats).
