The Club by Ellery Lloyd

The Club is the second novel written by the husband and wife writing team who go by Ellery Lloyd. Their second novel, it was a New York Times bestseller and chosen as the Reese's Book Club pick of March 2022. It has examples of addiction, an adult/minor relationship and pedophilia, alcoholism and drug use, death bullying, infidelity, sexual assault, dementia, a car accident that results in the death of parents, murder, and classism.

Celebrities everywhere want to be a member of the Home Group, and very selective chain of hotels and restaurants where the rich and famous can just be themselves, knowing that there is a strict no phones rule for employees and guests. Five Hundred of the Home Groups most elite members have been invited to the opening of their newest resort: Island Home. But during the weekend long party, tempers flare and behavior is at it's worst, and not everyone is leaving the island alive. We get to follow a woman who just realized her trust has been misplaced in the worst way possible, another who made an irreparable mistake that she will soon pay the price for, a man who's about to take his future in his own hands even if others don't like it, and a woman who finally has her chance for revenge after a lifetime of waiting.

The Club really does a great job of showing us that stars really are just like us: sloppy and susceptible to blackmail. This book was pretty interesting, it always kept me guessing. You find out at the beginning that someone has died and you get to relive the events of the previous two days as they happen, not knowing who that person is until close to the end. The writing was good, although it did sometimes get a bit long winded. The characters were interesting, and sometimes I felt for them, but I never really felt engaged by them or their troubles. A good weekend or beach read, something you don't have to pay too much attention to and still manages to keep your interest.

I'm giving The Club by Ellery Lloyd 4 stars out of 5. It was a fun read, but not something that will stick with me for very long. Ellery Lloyd has a few other books I may look into when I'm looking for something intriguing but not super heavy.

Pairs well with perfectly prepared eggs Florentine and an adult hissy fit if it's slightly underdone.
