The Emperor of Evening Stars by Laura Thalassa

A novella that fits into The Bargainer series by Laura Thalassa, this book slips right between books 2 and 3 in the series. It's a short read, only taking a few hours to get through the whole thing. If you need a quick refresh on what happens in the first to novels of the series, check out our summaries of The Bargainer series before you move on. We deal with death, sexual assault and rape, slavery, kidnapping, blood, grief, murder and war, injury details, pedophilia, and an adult/minor relationship.

We know Desmond and Callie's stories from Laura Thalassa's first two The Bargainer novels: Rhapsodic and A Strange Hymn, but now you get to hear it from Desmond's point of view. We get some backstory on Des and hear about his life with his mother and what he did after his mother was killed, as well as the prophecy her heard that destined him for a most unexpected mate.

I know that several authors have started prolonging the lifetime of their series by re-releasing books from different points of view, but I've never read any of them before. Laura Thalassa released The Emperor of the Evening Stars at the same time as the final book in the series, Dark Harmony. I'm actually quite happy that I read it. It's nothing ground-breaking but I think the back story on Des was pretty interesting, giving you a look at the single friendship he seemed to have and how lonely his life felt. In addition, seeing how he approached his relationship with Callie when she was a teenager was nice, it made me feel much better about them as a couple.

Overall, if you want to skip this one go ahead, but I think that The Emperor of the Evening Stars by Laura Thalassa was a nice addition to the series that made me like Desmond even more. I'm giving it a 3.75 out of 5 and it was completely spice free. If you've read the other books in The Bargainer series, I won't think you'll regret spending a few hours on this one.
