The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Lucy Foley is best known for her thrillers, although she has also written some historical books. Her most recent novel, The Midnight Feast, has been on my To Be Read list since I found out it was being released. The Guest List was was listed as one of the New York Times best thrillers of the year, as well as being a Waterstones and Reese's Book Club Pick.

When Jules, publisher of the online magazine Downbeat, got engaged to Will, an up and coming reality show actor, she knew that the wedding needed to be next level. She found an out of the way island in Ireland with a wedding space that has never been seen before. Really, this is the first wedding that is being held at The Folly, and it might be the last. We get the points of view of Jules, her half-sister and Maid of Honor Olivia, the Best Man and the groom's best friend from school Johnno, the bride's best friend's wife Hannah, and the wedding planner Aoife. Everybody is tense for one reason or another, and this wedding is bringing out all sorts of feelings, the wedding venue is a little gloomier than some would have expected, and there's a storm blowing in with winds so high the generator keeps cutting out. And all that happens before they find the body...

I enjoyed this book. It did a great job of making each narrating character unique and although there problems seem small at the beginning it becomes clear the longer that you read that the problems are, in fact, large and looming at the wedding. Olivia's in particular I did not see coming, and it really changed the way I saw some characters. Johnno's I saw coming for quite a while but Aoife's had a twist right at the end that I did not expect and I thought was quite fun. The writing was good, it kept it suspenseful but not so much that I couldn't relax. I didn't really like any of the characters except Hannah, but it didn't stop me from hating others on their behalf. An enemy of my enemy, am I right?

I'm giving The Guest List by Lucy Foley 4 stars out of 5. The first that I've read of her books, I will definitely be picking up more.

Pairs well with rosemary roasted potatoes (a very wedding food) and showing your wife the respect she deserves before she realizes that she deserves better, looking at you Charlie.
