The Lying Game by Ruth Ware

Ruth Ware is a best selling author worldwide, and although this is the first of her novels that I've read, The Woman in Cabin 10 is also on my "to be read" list. I've heard that The Lying Game comes together a little slower than her earlier novels, but I wouldn't say that it is slow at all but perhaps the main character is more introspective. This book is a thriller and deals with a fire resulting in death, alcohol, drug abuse, death of a parent, murder, suicide, addiction, eating disorder, self harm, and small amounts of fatphobia, infidelity accusations, animal death, child abuse.

Isa Wilde lives in London with her boyfriend and new baby daughter. She's living a nice, quiet, domesticated life while on maternity leave. One night, while up for a midnight feed, she gets a text message from an old friend that seriously unsettles her..."I need you." Isa doesn't understand what has happened, only that it must be serious, and she immediately takes a trip to Salten, the coastal town with a boarding school she attended briefly. The coastal town where she met her three oldest friends: Kate, Thea, and Fatima. The coastal town where she and her three friends did something they can never undo, something that will always tie them together.

I found this book to be quite entertaining. It's not my favorite book of the year, but it certainly had enough twists and turns throughout that it had be second guessing my hypotheses and doubting what I thought I knew. The characters were very likable, their interactions seemed genuine. There are some parts of the story that made me angry on behalf of Isa, some parts that made me angry at Isa, some parts that scared me. Most of all, this book made me grateful that the stupid things I did in high school weren't THAT stupid.

I'm giving The Lying Game by Ruth Ware 3.75 stars out of 4. I think it could have been a little shorter and the ending wasn't as spectacular as I hoped for, but I'll definitely be reading more of Ruth Ware's books.

Pairs well with an impromptu swim and fig with goat cheese and honey canapes.
